Secret #2- Expand What You Know!
After taking stock of what you already know and applying that, the next step is to:
Expand What You Know.....and then apply that.
I trust that by now you are seeing the common thread of application, application, application. You can also think of this concept as use it or lose it.
Sometimes we just need some fresh inspiration as guitarists. It's common to get stuck in a rut,
playing old familiar things, and becoming bored with one's own playing.
This happens to guitarists at all levels from beginner to pro.
When looking for ways to expand your guitar playing there are many things you can do.
Here's a few ideas:
*Find a teacher who either specializes in your style or teaches a different style and learn as much as you can.
*Go right to the source of your favorite music and learn something new.
*If you've always relied on tab to learn stuff, challenge yourself to use your ear only to learn a favorite lick or solo.
*Get a scale book or theory book and learn a new scale. Be adventurous!
*Choose a new technique you haven't explored and start investigating. You can start with free stuff by googling the topic, or searching on youtube.
*You can also find great online courses from a variety of excellent teachers.
Once you decide on the path you want to take don't forget to apply what you learn!
Watch the video above to see how I recently expanded my own soloing vocabulary by working on the Hungarian minor scale.
Stay tuned for the final video in this series, Secret #3 coming Tuesday!
