Hi, my name is Nick Layton and I'd like to welcome you to Firestarter Legato! I created this course because I felt there was a need for an organized practice routine, or workout, for developing the legato technique. Mostly what you will find on Google are random exercises and licks, which can be great on their own, but at the end of the day all you have is a bunch of unrelated material with no real direction on how to practice it.
Back in the 1980’s and 90’s when I was developing my legato chops I used exercises and ideas I gleaned from instructional videos by guys like Vinnie Moore and John Petrucci and created my own practice routine using those materials. I found that actually having a routine I could go to day after day was very important in developing my fret hand strength, accuracy, endurance, and yes, speed.
So I’ve created my own spin on some of my favorite exercises and put them together in an organized practice routine for you. I've taken all the guess work out of how and what to practice and created a program that should take you about 20 minutes to complete. I think of this routine as similar to a “workout” at the gym, or on the track. Although these exercises are not particularly musical in nature, they serve the purpose of preparing your muscles for greater things when it’s “game time,”—just as an athlete would lift weights or run sprints to play their best in a game, the same is true for us as guitar players--we need to prepare our guitar playing muscles for playing our best when it counts!
